If God is male, then male is God. The divine patriarch castrates women as long as he is allowed to live on in the human imagination.

Mary Daly

Saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Mary Daly, on January 3, 2010, she was 81 years old. Dr. Daly was a courageous theologian and philosopher… a lesbian feminist Catholic theologian who taught at Boston College for 33 years.

Daly was a pioneer in challenging patriarchal leadership and theology in all organized religion. Her theological writings and courses essentially started the feminist theology movement.

She used the words, “radical lesbian feminist” to self-identify and given the patriarchal theological context into which she stepped it’s hard to imagine three better words. I simply can’t fathom just how much love of God, neighbor, and self one would have to know in order to stand in the face of such a male and homophobic world. The Church lost a hero, this week.

Here are just a few of Dr. Daly’s many titles:

Courage is like — it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: you get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.

Mary Daly

Rest in Peace, dwight
