Recovering or relearning how to live in harmony with creation is vital to our survival. I call on all people of faith to search their sacred texts for examples of, teachings about, or practices for living in harmony with the rest of creation.

In my tradition there is one Creator, everything else is creation. When we look closely, we quickly discover how creatures are created in need of each other, so often there is a profound interdependence in the order of things.

As you likely know the Abrahamic traditions share a creation narrative in which creation begins in perfect harmony: a relational ecosystem of shalom. The quest for faithful presence invites the question how do we live in healthy reciprocal relationship with the bodies of water that sustain us.

This year’s United Nations World Oceans Day, on 8 June 2022, will highlight the theme Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean. This is the first hybrid celebration of the annual event, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcast live.

As greenhouse gases warm the Earth, our oceans play a significant role in absorbing heat that helps regulate rising temperatures.
