From the Off-The-Map web site:

David Ruis is a pioneer in reinterpreting the work of the Holy Spirit in today’s culture. His experience in neo Pentecostalism combined with his work among the poor provides a rich backdrop for us to explore how we can expand our vision and practices to embrace a wider understanding of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and through our leadership.”

The seeming void of the Holy Spirit in the emerging church movement may be due in part that many leaders in the emerging church have grown up with cessationist origins and were taught a nonthaumaturgic faith in college and seminary. This combined with the the lack of a credible witness to a sensible and Biblical praxis of the Holy Spirit and the absence of a personal demonstrative experience of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit has led to a nominalizing of the person and work of the Holy Spirit in emerging conversations and practice.

It also seems that the vocabulary of the Holy Spirit is still limited to the pentecostal and Charismatic lexicon and a new language of the Holy Spirit (no pun intended) is needed for a postmodern resurgence of the Holy Spirit and to pull the outward behavior of the Spirit from cultural antiquity.

However unlike cessationist evangelicals who typically are dismissive of the supernatural aspects of faith, emerging Christians are very embracing of the mystical and many are pursuing a transcendant involvement with God utilizing ancient and innovative spiritual disciplines.
