Earlier today I came across a post-election reflection piece on the Church Anew website by Dr. Walter Brueggemann… the wise, influential, and kind Hebrew Bible scholar. Brueggemann’s article is titled, “Beyond the Fetal Position,” and I commend it to you.
Brueggemann reflects on the post-2024 election disappointment, drawing parallels with the story of Elijah, who faced despair after his defiance of royal powers. Elijah, on the run and feeling abandoned by God, encounters an angel who cares for him with food and water. This sustenance helps Elijah rediscover purpose, pushing him beyond self-pity to fulfill his prophetic role. Brueggemann sees this as a lesson for contemporary justice advocates: while disappointment is natural, it’s vital to accept support, but not to dwell in defeat. Instead, we’re called to return to the work of peace, truth, and justice, acknowledging both the challenges and the solidarity of allies, just as Elijah discovered he was not alone. This is a long-term commitment, likened to Jeremiah’s call to persevere, even amid hardship.
Take a look! I know I found it very helpful. Thank you Dr. Brueggemann.
Peace, dwight
