Today at sun down our Islamic sisters and brothers enter into the holy season of Ramadan. The annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, community, and giving. The practice of Ramadan commemorates the month in which the Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), as a guide for human beings.
Blessings to all my muslim friends entering this holy season.
For people of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish faith this is a holy season of the year. Our Jewish siblings are moving toward Passover, Christians are already on their Lenten journey with Christ toward Holy Week, and now Ramadan is here. Certainly, our traditions are distinct, each with a discrete and particular telos, but these holy days suggest that many people around our world are opening up to greater spiritual awareness, intention, and compassionate action. May it be so. There is so much violence in the world, and the way of the Divine invites love of God and love of neighbor as we love ourselves.
Peace, dwight
