1960 – Pope John 23rd named seven new cardinals, including Archbishop Peter Tatsuo Doi (First Japanese Cardinal), Archbishop Rufino J. Santos (First Filipino Cardinal), and Bishop Laurian Rugambwa (First African Cardinal).
1973 – The American Indian Movement (AIM) set up a tepee south of Wounded Knee, SD on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to begin negotiations between the AIM and Federal authorities.
