“Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
– Maya Angelou
In the Canada and the USA, today is Labor Day. Its day a commemorating the labor union movement which ushered in the 5 day, 40 hour work week.
Seattle has one of Johnathan Borofsky’s moving sculptures of the “Hammering Man.” He stands nearly fifty feet tall, in front of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). The hammering man swings his hammer about twice a minute every day all year long, with one exception… Labor Day. Today even the hammering man gets to take a break. His hammer stops.
Today we walk off the job.
Today we are reminded that we are more than what we produce. We rest.
So on this day – if you are able – join Seattle’s Hammering Man and take a much needed break. You deserve a rest.
Peace, dwight
