Quantum theory also tells us that the world is not simply objective; somehow it’s something more subtle than that. In some sense it is veiled from us, but it has a structure that we can understand.
John Polkinghorne
I’m grieving the loss of Dr. John C. Polkinghorne. I just learned that he died on March 9, 2021. While I never had opportunity to meet Dr. Polkinghorne in person, his life and writings have helped me immensely.
His is an awe inspiring story. Quite famously, he was a world class theoretical physicist turned Anglican priest and theologian. He was a professor of mathematical physics at Cambridge for more than a decade before resigning his chair to prepare for the priesthood; ordained in 1982. He served as a vicar, dean of chapel at Trinity Hall, and canon theologian of Liverpool Cathedral.
Dr. Polkinghorne was a prolific author; publishing five books in the field of physics and twenty-six books exploring the relationship between science and theology/religion. The following are some of his titles that have enlarged my world:
It is the faithfulness of God that allows epistemology to model ontology.
