Just got home after an amazing time at Canada’s Skylight Festival. Special thanks to Russell Mitchell-Walker and the entire organizing team for curating a truly beautiful event. The artists, facilitators, & presenters included: Anna Golladay, Mike McHargue (aka Science Mike), Micah Bournes, Dave Harder, Drew Brown, Emily Joy, Peterson Toscano, and many more.
This year’s overarching theme was, “Courage to be….” My presentation was titled:
Parish 101: Courage to be Present
“Jesus once summed up all of scripture by saying “love God & love your neighbor.” The primary way we love God is through loving our neighbor, and one the primal – if not most overlooked – ways we love our neighbor is by loving our neighborhood. Dwight Friesen will offer emergent observations that he and his colleagues have been discovering from over 1,000 parish tours from all over the world. The parish is the natural platform which brings difference together while transforming justice and equity from abstracted issues to relational realities. This recovery of the local may well be the great dare to the people of God in our time, as this recovery of place woos us to foster courage to be faithfully present as Christ was present in all facets of everyday life. “
Blurb for my workshop @ Skylight
It was so much fun, but it also felt like a really important conversation. This is one of the few conversations drawing progressive Canadian Christians into conversation. So vital!
Peace, dwight
