I’m excited to inform you that as of the beginning of last week we officially changed the name of our school – Mars Hill Graduate School is now The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. The staff has been hard at work these past months as we prepared for this change. Official documents were changed, governing bodies were notified, a new web domain was secured, email addresses updated, stationery was designed and ordered, and as you can see we have updated our brand to better reflect our identity.

Our new name will now carry our important mission and work into the future. And may God continue to bless our efforts to train people to be competent in the study of text, soul and culture in order to serve God and neighbor through transforming relationships.

Important Info:

Our new web address is theseattleschool.edu

Email addresses: First Initial Last Name @theseattleschool.edu – emails sent to @mhgs.edu will be forwarded on for several months.

Building signage updates are coming this week.

For short, please utilize “The Seattle School” as opposed to our new initials TSS or TSSTP.

Peace, dwight

What does it mean for Christians to be salt and light in this acrimonious cultural climate? How might Christians live faithfully without colluding with partisan shouting? Are there more productive atheisms and theisms than we find in their contemporary resurgent forms? How do we understand the rise of the current “God debate,” and is there a third way beyond it?

Come join Jon in exploring how Christian faith can be a source of hospitality rather than hostility, one that opens a space for meaningful conversation between religious and secular people, and increased traffic between religious and secular thought, in our pluralistic society.

Dr. Pinnock was a strong and at times conversational voice in the Evangelical movement. He taught most recently at MacMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. And published many books, including (but certainly not limited to):

Flame of Love: A Theology of the Holy Spirit (one of my favorite books on the theology of the Holy Spirit),

The Scripture Principle: Reclaiming the Full Authority of the Bible,

The Grace of God and the Will of Man,

Dr. Pinnock also wrote Most Moved Mover: A Theology of God’s Openness and co-authored, The Openness of God: A Biblical Challenge to the Traditional Understanding of God, both of which were central to discussion of what has become known as “Open Theism.”

No stranger to controversy Dr. Pinnock affirmed an annihilationist view of hell that says that the “unsaved” will experience extinction rather than eternal conscious torment.

Both my sister-in-law and my brother had the pleasure of studying under Dr. Pinnock. Though I never had the privilege of meeting Dr. Pinnock I am deeply grateful for his writing and his contribution to North American Christian theology and especially for his influence within the Evangelical movement.

My deepest sympathies go out to his wife Dorothy, Little Bethel Community Church, and all who were blessed to personally know him.

As I’ve been reading I have to say that Botswanan biblical scholar, Dr. Musa Dube is fast becoming one of my favorite theologians.

I first discovered Musa a number of years ago while doing some research on interpretations of Israel conquering Jericho. But ever since I learned that Dr. Dube will be part of the Emergent Theological Conversation I’ve been ordering and reading everything I can get my hands on.

Thought I’d pass along a link a great essay by Musa titled: “Jumping the Fire with Judah: Postcolonial Feminist Hermeneutics of Liberation,” it from a collection edited by Silvia Schroer & Sophia Bietenhard titled: Feminist Interpretation of the Bible and Hermeneutics of Liberation.

Ray was the theologian, who more than anyone shaped my incarnational theology; and has been a leading light in the integration of theology & psychology. And I love the way he personally invested himself in the lives of emerging church leaders.

Though I did not know Dr. Anderson personally, I have read many, many of his writings, and have been personally influenced by many whose lives he touched. For a lovely tribute of his life see Christian D. Kettler’s blog.

My deepest condolences go out to all those for whom Ray’s death leaves a daily void.

peace, dwight
